Amit Shah Urges National Recognition for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Stresses Legacy Beyond Maharashtra

Date:

Pune, India – Marking the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a strong case for integrating the Maratha ruler’s legacy into the national consciousness. Speaking at a commemorative event, Shah called for removing the regional lens through which Shivaji is often viewed, asserting that his life, values, and governance offer lessons of universal relevance for all Indians.

During his address, Shah stated that every Indian child should be taught about Shivaji Maharaj, whose life embodies the ideals of self-governance, cultural pride, and national unity. By referring to Shivaji as an “ideal of service to the motherland and good governance,” the minister emphasized the importance of recognizing the Maratha king not just as a regional hero but as a symbol of Indian identity and resilience.

‘Shivaji’s Legacy Transcends State Boundaries’

“Do not limit Shivaji Maharaj to Maharashtra,” Shah said emphatically. “The story of Shivaji should be taught to every Indian. It should be taught to every child. The country and the world are taking inspiration from him.”

These remarks underline the government’s growing inclination to promote historical figures like Shivaji Maharaj on a national platform. Shah’s speech also reflects the increasing narrative to frame India’s freedom movement as one that began centuries before the colonial period, rooted in indigenous resistance against foreign invasions.

Referring to Shivaji’s principles, Shah remarked that three key ideas—pride in religion, aspiration for self-rule (Swarajya), and the preservation of language—represent more than political ideals; they are elements of human dignity. He argued that these are “not connected to the borders of the country, but to the self-respect of human life.”

Saluting the Role of Rajmata Jijau

In his tribute, Shah also highlighted the influence of Rajmata Jijabai, Shivaji’s mother, whose teachings and values helped shape the future king’s vision.

“She gave Shivaji the idea of uniting and liberating the entire country as a child,” Shah stated. He credited her with planting the seed for Hindavi Swarajya—a vision of self-rule deeply rooted in Indian values. “It is the responsibility of all of us that every child in India should read Shivaji Charitra and learn from it.”

Shah’s repeated acknowledgment of Jijabai’s role reflects an increasing recognition of the contributions of women in shaping India’s historical and political journey.

Shivaji as a Pan-India Figure

Amit Shah’s address traced the military and administrative legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, whose campaigns extended from Attock in the northwest to Cuttack in the east, and as far south as Karnataka. This geographical expanse was cited to support the claim that Shivaji’s influence was never confined to Maharashtra alone.

“A 12-year-old boy took an oath to hoist the saffron flag from Sindhu to Kanyakumari,” Shah noted. Reflecting on Shivaji’s ability to inspire and unite, Shah said that the Maratha ruler demonstrated indomitable willpower, strategic brilliance, and a deep sense of duty to his people.

He also highlighted how Shivaji forged an undefeated army without any significant political inheritance or military advantage, eventually delivering decisive blows to the Mughal empire and inspiring generations to come.

From Historical Warrior to National Icon

Framing Shivaji as a precursor to modern Indian nationalism, Shah said, “The country was saved, the language was saved. Today, after independence, we stand tall in the world.”

Shah also referred to Shivaji as the originator of Hindavi Swabhiman (Indian self-respect), suggesting that his ideology continues to shape India’s national ethos even today. “The consciousness created by Shivaji Maharaj became the carrier of ‘Hindavi Swabhiman’. Today, the resolve for Hindvi Swaraj has become so strong that the country can take the resolve that when India completes 100 years of independence, it will be the first in the world,” he added.

Political Context and Cultural Messaging

Shah’s speech comes amid ongoing efforts to reframe Indian history from a cultural-nationalist perspective, placing greater emphasis on pre-colonial rulers who resisted foreign rule. This aligns with the central government’s push to reshape educational curricula and national discourse by incorporating narratives that reflect indigenous pride and resilience.

By positioning Shivaji Maharaj as a nationwide figure of resistance, cultural revival, and governance, the government seeks to foster a broader pan-Indian identity rooted in historical pride.

This narrative also feeds into the contemporary political context, where invoking historical icons helps consolidate political messaging and connect emotionally with citizens across states and communities.

A Legacy for the Next Generation

Through his tribute, Shah expressed a desire to see Shivaji’s life lessons embedded in India’s educational and moral fabric. He framed the Maratha king as not only a warrior but as a ruler who stood for decentralized administration, civil liberties, and social cohesion—principles that modern India continues to grapple with.

As India marches toward its 100th year of independence in 2047, Shah’s speech suggested that the teachings of Shivaji Maharaj could offer a roadmap for national development, cultural integrity, and global leadership.

Union Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s death anniversary served not only as a tribute to a historical leader but also as a clarion call to nationalize Shivaji’s legacy. Emphasizing education, cultural pride, and historical awareness, Shah argued for moving beyond regional boundaries and embracing Shivaji as a national icon whose life and leadership continue to inspire generations. His call to teach every Indian child about Shivaji reflects an ongoing effort to reimagine India’s past in the service of its future.
