Tragic Bus Accident in Thailand: 18 Dead, 23 Injured After Brake Failure

Date:

At least 18 people lost their lives, and 23 others sustained injuries after a tour bus overturned into a ditch in eastern Thailand on Wednesday. Authorities reported that the brakes of the bus failed, causing the driver to lose control on a downhill road before the vehicle flipped upside down.

Deadly Accident on a Study Trip

According to Colonel Sophon Phramaneehe, the victims were all adults on a study trip. The bus, carrying 49 passengers, including the driver, crashed in Prachinburi province, about 155 km (96 miles) east of Bangkok.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where social media footage showed rescue and medical workers aiding survivors near the overturned bus with its undercarriage exposed.

Prime Minister’s Condolences and Investigation

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that an investigation into the accident was underway.

“If it is found that there is a violation of the use of vehicles that do not meet the standards or are involved in reckless use of vehicles, legal action will be taken,” she stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

She also stressed the importance of vehicle safety inspections, adding, “Inspection of vehicles must be safe and pass the specified standards before they are put into use to prevent accidents and reduce losses like this again.”

Thailand’s Road Safety Concerns

Thailand has a high rate of road accidents, with weak enforcement of vehicle safety standards and poorly maintained roads contributing to frequent fatalities. According to the World Health Organization’s 2023 report, Thailand ranked ninth out of 175 countries for road traffic deaths.

The country has experienced several tragic bus accidents in recent years. Last year, a school bus fire caused by a gas cylinder leak killed 23 people, including 16 students.

Call for Stricter Road Safety Measures

Authorities and road safety advocates continue to push for stricter regulations and better enforcement to curb Thailand’s alarming rate of road fatalities. As investigations into the Prachinburi bus crash continue, families of the victims and concerned citizens hope for stronger oversight and improved vehicle safety protocols to prevent further tragedies.
