Sitharaman Launches PMIS App: One Crore Internships for Indian Youth

Date:

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday launched the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) mobile application, aimed at making internship opportunities more accessible to young job seekers across India. She urged companies to actively participate in the initiative, emphasizing its potential to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.

PM Internship Scheme App Features

The newly launched PMIS app is designed to provide a seamless user experience, allowing candidates to register easily using Aadhaar face authentication. Key features include:

  • Personalized Dashboard: Users can browse internships based on location and sector-specific preferences.
  • Real-Time Alerts: Notifications about new openings and updates.
  • Dedicated Support Team: Assistance for candidates navigating the application process.
  • Referral Program: Registered users can refer others and earn rewards.

Industry Participation and Economic Impact

During the launch, Sitharaman highlighted that corporate participation is essential for the scheme’s success. Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, also stressed the importance of industry involvement in shaping a skilled and job-ready workforce.

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, announced in the Union Budget 2024-25, aims to provide one crore internships in India’s top 500 companies over the next five years. The initiative focuses on offering paid internship opportunities, enhancing skill development, and increasing employability among Indian youth.

Pilot Project Success and Expansion

The PM Internship Scheme was launched as a pilot project on October 3, 2024, targeting 1.25 lakh internships for the 2024-25 financial year. The first round (Oct-Dec 2024) witnessed tremendous success, with over 1.27 lakh internships posted across 745 districts. Nearly 82,000 candidates received offers from 280 companies spanning 25 sectors.

  • Banking & Finance
  • Sales & Marketing

  • Technical roles for ITI diploma holders

Financial Assistance for Interns

The PM Internship Scheme provides financial support to interns:

  • Monthly stipend of ₹5,000
  • One-time financial assistance of ₹6,000
  • Internships lasting a minimum of six months and up to one year

The scheme is designed for unemployed youth aged 21-24 who are not enrolled in full-time academic programs, giving them a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world business environments.

New Initiatives in Round II

To further enhance accessibility and effectiveness, the PMIS portal dashboard has been upgraded, and more than 80 outreach events have been conducted at colleges, educational institutes, and Rozgar Melas to spread awareness about the scheme. Additionally, a new assessment framework has been introduced to evaluate states and recognize outstanding implementation efforts.

Application Process and Deadline

Eligible youth can apply for Round II of the PM Internship Scheme until March 31, 2025, through the PMIS mobile app or via the official portal at https://pminternship.mca.gov.in/.

With the launch of this dedicated mobile application, the government aims to revolutionize youth employment opportunities by creating a structured internship ecosystem that fosters skill development and career growth.
