Srinagar, April 02: Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti, has strongly criticized the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, calling it an attempt to disempower Muslims in India. The bill, tabled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the Lok Sabha, has sparked significant controversy and debate among political and social circles.
Mehbooba Mufti’s Statement
In her statement, Mehbooba Mufti expressed her disappointment with the ruling BJP government and emphasized her belief in secular Hindus. She urged them to come forward to safeguard the constitutional values of the nation. Mufti stated, “I don’t have any hope with BJP but have high hopes with secular Hindus. This country has to run as per the Constitution.”
The PDP leader pointed out that Muslims in India have faced continuous challenges, including targeted lynching incidents, demolition of mosques, and encroachment on graveyards over the last decade. She alleged that the current bill is part of a larger conspiracy to weaken the Muslim community’s socio-religious institutions.
Mufti further warned that India risks losing its secular identity if divisive policies continue. She stressed that the country belongs to Gandhi’s vision of harmony and should not be governed by the BJP’s political agenda. “The BJP is breaking this country apart,” she said, calling on people to resist what she termed divisive tactics.
The Contentious Waqf Amendment Bill
The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024 seeks to introduce changes in the management and administration of Waqf properties across India. Critics argue that the amendments may centralize control over Waqf boards, undermining their autonomy and allowing governmental interference in the functioning of religious institutions. The BJP, however, argues that the bill aims to bring transparency and efficiency to Waqf management.
Reaction from Political Circles
The bill has sparked varied reactions from political leaders and social activists. While Mufti views the bill as an attack on the Muslim community, BJP leaders maintain that the reforms are necessary to tackle corruption and mismanagement within Waqf boards. However, opposition leaders across the spectrum have raised concerns about potential misuse of power and infringement on religious rights.
Historical Context of Waqf Properties
Waqf properties have historically played a vital role in the social and religious lives of Muslims in India. Managed by Waqf boards, these properties include mosques, graveyards, schools, and other community assets. Any legislative changes affecting Waqf management are inherently sensitive, given their deep-rooted cultural and religious significance.
Civil Society’s Perspective
Several civil society organizations have expressed concern that the new amendments could lead to a loss of community control over Waqf assets. There is a growing fear that the bill may lead to political interference, thereby diluting the fundamental purpose of these religious trusts.
The controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024 underscores the ongoing debate over secularism and religious rights in India. As Mehbooba Mufti’s strong opposition highlights the apprehensions within the Muslim community, the government’s insistence on reforming the Waqf management system reflects a divergent perspective. The coming days are likely to witness intensified political debates as the bill progresses through parliamentary procedures.
