The 6th edition of the India-Japan joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian, concluded successfully at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan on March 9. Held over two weeks from February 24 to March 9, this year’s exercise was conducted on an enhanced scale, with participation at the company-strength level, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defense cooperation between the two nations.

Strengthening India-Japan Defense Ties

The closing ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Toriumi Seiji, the Commanding General of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) 1st Division. He commended the troops for successfully achieving the objectives of the exercise and emphasized its role in improving operational readiness, mutual understanding, and overall defense cooperation between India and Japan.

Dharma Guardian serves as a key initiative in deepening the strategic partnership between India and Japan, reinforcing their shared commitment to regional peace, security, and stability. The exercise reflects both countries’ intent to bolster interoperability and refine joint operational tactics for counter-terrorism and peacekeeping missions.

Counter-Terrorism & Peacekeeping Training

The primary focus of Exercise Dharma Guardian was counter-terrorism operations in urban environments, a crucial area of collaboration for both nations. The exercise also incorporated aspects of United Nations peacekeeping operations, including Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR). Throughout the training, troops participated in:

  • Tactical drills to enhance combat readiness
  • Knowledge exchange on operational conduct and strategy
  • Scenario-based joint operations simulating real-world threats

A 72-hour validation phase formed the culmination of the exercise, featuring a simulated joint counter-terrorism operation in an urban setting. The final phase showcased advanced military techniques, including heli-borne insertion, slithering, and storming operations, successfully demonstrating the operational coordination and effectiveness of both forces.

Cultural Exchange & Mutual Learning

Beyond military drills, Dharma Guardian also facilitated cultural exchanges, fostering deeper ties between the armed forces. The Indian contingent conducted a special Yoga session for Japanese troops and demonstrated Kalari Pattu, India’s ancient martial art form. In return, Japanese troops presented traditional Japanese martial arts, further enriching the cross-cultural experience.

Reaffirming the India-Japan Defense Partnership

The successful completion of Dharma Guardian 2025 highlights the growing defense collaboration between India and Japan, showcasing their ability to operate jointly in complex security environments. The exercise reaffirmed both nations’ dedication to strengthening defense cooperation, enhancing security preparedness, and upholding regional stability.
