Women Leave Abusive Husbands to Build a Life Together

Date:

In a rare and courageous act of defiance against societal norms, two women from Uttar Pradesh have made headlines by tying the knot at a temple in Deoria. Their story is not only a testament to the enduring human spirit but also a commentary on the social issues plaguing countless households in India.

Kavita and Gunja, also known as Bablu, connected initially through Instagram, a platform often criticized for its superficiality but which, in this case, became a medium for meaningful connection. Their bond deepened over time, driven by shared experiences of hardship and pain.

Both women endured similar circumstances—suffering domestic violence and neglect at the hands of their alcoholic husbands. The torment they faced in their respective marriages brought them closer, ultimately leading them to make a life-changing decision to leave their pasts behind and embark on a journey of love and mutual support.

From Instagram Friends to Lovers

The couple chose the Shiva Temple, locally referred to as Choti Kashi, in Deoria as the venue for their union. The ceremony, which took place on a serene Thursday evening, was symbolic and intimate. Gunja took on the role of the groom during the ceremony. She applied sindoor (vermillion) on Kavita’s forehead, exchanged garlands, and the two completed the traditional seven pheras, signifying their commitment to each other. “We were tormented by our husbands’ drinking and abusive behavior. This pushed us to choose a life of peace and love. We have decided to live in Gorakhpur as a couple and work to sustain ourselves,” Gunja shared with reporters after the wedding.

The priest of the Shiva Temple, Uma Shankar Pandey, confirmed the details of the ceremony. According to him, the women came prepared, bringing garlands and sindoor to perform the rituals. After completing their vows, they left quietly without creating any commotion.

The ceremony’s simplicity belied its profound significance. While it adhered to traditional Hindu wedding customs, the union of two women challenged the orthodox views of marriage still prevalent in many parts of India. As news of their marriage spread, reactions have been mixed. Some have lauded their bravery and expressed support for their decision to prioritize love and peace over societal approval. Others, however, have criticized their actions, citing traditional norms and questioning the legality of their union.

Legal Standing of Same-Sex Marriages in India

Currently, India does not legally recognize same-sex marriages. Although the decriminalization of homosexuality in 2018 through the historic Supreme Court judgment of Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India was a significant step toward LGBTQ+ rights, marriage equality remains an unresolved issue. The story of Kavita and Gunja brings this gap in legislation to the forefront, highlighting the struggles faced by same-sex couples in the country.

Despite the legal challenges, the couple has expressed determination to live together and build a life in Gorakhpur. Their story reflects the resilience of individuals who choose love and self-respect over societal constraints.

Kavita and Gunja’s experiences shine a light on two pervasive issues in Indian society—domestic violence and alcohol abuse. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), domestic violence remains a grave concern, with a significant percentage of married women reporting physical, emotional, or sexual abuse by their husbands. Alcohol abuse often exacerbates domestic violence. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the correlation between excessive alcohol consumption and increased rates of intimate partner violence.
