Sudan Market Massacre: 54 Killed in Brutal RSF Attack – Survivors Speak Out

Date:

In a tragic escalation of Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict, an attack on the Sabrein Market in Omdurman on February 1, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 54 individuals and left 158 others wounded, according to health authorities. The assault, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marks a significant and devastating event in the nation’s protracted struggle.

Sudan Sabrein Market Attack

The Sabrein Market, a bustling hub in Omdurman, was the scene of chaos and devastation as artillery shells rained down, causing widespread destruction. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic, with civilians scrambling for cover amid the onslaught. The attack not only resulted in a significant loss of life but also inflicted severe injuries on many, overwhelming local medical facilities.

Following the attack, the nearby Al-Naw Hospital became inundated with casualties. The Sudanese Doctors Syndicate highlighted the dire situation, noting that a mortar shell had landed mere meters from the hospital’s entrance. The majority of the victims were women and children, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence. The hospital faced a critical shortage of medical personnel, particularly surgeons and nurses, complicating efforts to provide adequate care to the wounded.

Khalid al-Aleisir, Sudan’s Minister of Culture and government spokesperson, condemned the attack, labeling it a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law.” He emphasized that such actions add to the “bloody record” of the RSF. International organizations and human rights groups have also expressed alarm over the escalating violence, calling for immediate investigations and accountability.

The RSF and Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict

The Rapid Support Forces, originally formed from the Janjaweed militias notorious for their role in the Darfur conflict, have been engaged in a power struggle with Sudan’s military since April 2023. This internal conflict has led to widespread violence, with both sides accused of committing atrocities against civilians. The RSF, under the leadership of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been implicated in numerous attacks targeting civilian populations, contributing to a deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.

The ongoing conflict has had a catastrophic impact on Sudan’s civilian population. Reports indicate that more than 28,000 people have been killed since the fighting began. Millions have been displaced, forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The destruction of infrastructure, including markets, hospitals, and schools, has disrupted daily life and access to essential services. In some areas, families have resorted to eating grass to survive, highlighting the severity of the famine sweeping parts of the country.

In response to the escalating violence and reports of widespread atrocities, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced investigations into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the conflict. The ICC’s involvement underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability. The international community is closely monitoring developments, with calls for both the RSF and Sudanese military to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives.

The attack on Omdurman’s Sabrein Market is a stark reminder of the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Sudan. As the conflict continues, the toll on civilian lives and the country’s infrastructure grows increasingly dire. Immediate international attention and intervention are crucial to address the suffering and to work towards a peaceful resolution.
