As the Maha Kumbh nears its final phase, preparations are in full swing across the country to ensure the smooth arrival of thousands of devotees to the holy city of Prayagraj for the final Amrit Snan. The grand occasion is scheduled to take place on February 26, coinciding with Mahashivratri. With a massive influx of pilgrims expected over the preceding weekend, Indian Railways has been put on high alert, implementing heightened security protocols and robust crowd management strategies.
Enhanced Security and Vigilant Crowd Control Measures
In the lead-up to the auspicious day of the Amrit Snan, the Indian Railways has focused its efforts on ensuring the safety of the pilgrims, who will be traveling from across the country. Prayagraj, home to the sacred Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet, is one of the most sacred destinations for millions of devotees during the Maha Kumbh. The massive pilgrimage has seen devotees from far-flung states, such as Bihar, Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the northeastern states, flocking to the region via railways.
At one of the critical transit points—Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction—in Uttar Pradesh, enhanced security measures have been put in place to handle the rush of passengers. To manage the crowds, holding areas have been strategically set up outside key stations, ensuring that people can wait safely and comfortably for their designated trains.
The authorities have also implemented strict measures to curb unauthorized entry at these stations. Ticket checks have become more stringent, and passengers must pass through carefully monitored points to prevent unnecessary chaos.
A High Alert System in Place for Mahashivratri Weekend
According to Shashikant Tripathi, North Central Railway CPRO, the railways have been on high alert since the commencement of the Maha Kumbh. He confirmed that the Railways had already accounted for an increased number of passengers and had made the necessary preparations well in advance. As the Mahashivratri weekend approaches, more efforts will be made to streamline the travel experience for everyone involved.
“We are prepared for the increased volume of pilgrims. In case congestion worsens at stations, we will implement a single-entry and exit system. This strategy will help regulate the flow of passengers, allowing them to enter from one side and exit from the other, thus reducing overcrowding,” Tripathi stated.
A unique measure to tackle overcrowding includes the designation of colour-coded holding areas. These holding areas will be divided based on passengers traveling in different directions, ensuring a more organized waiting process. In case stations reach their full capacity, additional passengers will be accommodated in the holding area at Khusro Bagh. This was a tactic successfully employed during previous Amrit Snan days.
“We are ready for the rush, and all steps will be taken to ensure smooth travel for every passenger,” Tripathi said.
Security Forces Deployed for Seamless Operations
The safety and security of the pilgrims are top priorities for the authorities. A multi-tiered security setup has been created with the presence of several forces such as the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the Government Railway Police (GRP), local police units, and the elite CORAS (Commando Unit). These forces have been deployed at key railway stations to ensure that there is no breach of law and order. Additionally, surveillance measures have been boosted to cover all the major transit points.
The deployment of CCTV cameras has been significantly increased across major stations to provide real-time surveillance and support law enforcement in tracking any irregularities. RPF personnel are stationed at various points to ensure smooth and secure operations, with the entire security apparatus geared up to handle the large-scale influx of devotees.
Rajesh Gupta, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), along with Sudhanshu Kumar, Senior Deputy Chief Commercial Manager (DCM), and Muhammad Iqbal, Senior Divisional Operating Manager (DOM), is overseeing the operations and security measures for the event. They have been in regular consultation with local police and other authorities to fine-tune the security protocols and ensure that all aspects of the event are meticulously managed.
East Central Railway CPRO, Saraswati Chandra, further confirmed that the East Central Railway zone has also ramped up security efforts at all major stations. Additional teams have been deployed, and extensive CCTV coverage has been implemented to monitor the situation.
Crowd Management and Logistical Preparations
The significant number of pilgrims arriving for the Amrit Snan has brought forward several logistical challenges. Indian Railways has long been at the forefront of managing large crowds, especially during major religious events like the Kumbh Mela. This time, the authorities are not only focused on the logistics but also ensuring the safety of each traveler. Stations are being designed with larger platforms and more spacious areas for passengers to avoid overcrowding.
For trains coming from long distances, especially from states like Bihar and West Bengal, trains will be well-stocked with essential supplies. These include water and food supplies, which will be provided to passengers in large volumes, helping to sustain them during their long journeys.
Additionally, for passengers traveling to the Triveni Sangam, specific trains have been marked for convenience. Officials have worked closely with local authorities to establish direct links between Prayagraj and key neighboring regions to ensure smoother transitions.
Cooperation Between Various Authorities
The Indian Railways has worked in tandem with local police forces, emergency services, and the District Administration to provide seamless operations. These authorities have also implemented emergency response systems to respond rapidly in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
In case of an emergency or medical situation, the RPF has trained personnel ready to take action, ensuring the wellbeing of passengers throughout the duration of the festival. First-aid teams, along with ambulances, have been positioned at strategic locations to provide immediate medical support.
The District Magistrate of Prayagraj has also coordinated with local hospitals and health centers, ensuring that there is adequate medical staff available to assist pilgrims who may require any health-related assistance.
